Paint Protection Film (PPF) Maintenance & Aftercare Guide

Your vehicle has been professionally protected with Paint Protection Film (PPF) by Unit-11. To ensure the film continues to perform at its best and maintains its appearance, it’s essential to follow a dedicated maintenance routine. This guide provides detailed instructions to help you care for your PPF-treated vehicle effectively.

Initial Curing Period – First 7 Days

  • Avoid Washing: Do not wash your vehicle for at least 7 days post-installation to allow the film to cure properly.
  • Moisture Bubbles: It’s normal to observe minor moisture or haze under the film during this period. These will dissipate as the film cures.
  • Contaminant Removal: If bird droppings, tree sap, or other contaminants land on the film, gently remove them with a soft, damp microfibre cloth. Avoid rubbing or applying pressure.

Regular Maintenance Wash (Every 2 Weeks or 1,000 Miles)

1. Preparation

  • Shaded Environment: Wash your vehicle in a shaded area, ensuring the surface is cool to prevent water spots.

  • Two-Bucket Method: Use one bucket for the shampoo solution and another for rinsing your wash mitt to minimise the risk of swirl marks.

  • pH-Neutral Shampoo: Opt for a pH-neutral car shampoo free from waxes, gloss enhancers, or abrasive additives.

  • Quality Tools: Utilise a soft microfibre wash mitt and dedicated drying towels to protect the film’s surface.

2. Wheel Cleaning

  • Separate Tools: Always clean wheels first using separate mitts and brushes to prevent cross-contamination.

  • Cool Down: Ensure wheels and brakes are cool before cleaning to avoid damaging the film or brake components.

  • Thorough Rinse: After cleaning, rinse wheels thoroughly to remove all residues.

3. Pre-Wash

  • Snow Foam Application: Apply a pH-neutral snow foam to the entire vehicle, allowing it to dwell for 3–5 minutes to loosen dirt and contaminants.

  • Rinse: Thoroughly rinse off the foam, removing as much dirt as possible before contact washing.

4. Contact Wash

  • Top-Down Approach: Start washing from the top of the vehicle, working downwards to prevent dragging dirt to cleaner areas.

  • Straight-Line Motions: Use straight-line motions rather than circular ones to minimise the risk of swirl marks.

  • Regular Rinsing: Rinse your wash mitt frequently in the clean water bucket to remove trapped dirt.

  • Final Rinse: After washing all panels, rinse the vehicle thoroughly to remove all shampoo residues.

5. Drying

  • Microfibre Towels or Air Blower: Dry the vehicle using clean, plush microfibre towels or a purpose-built automotive air blower. This prevents contact marring and helps clear water from crevices and badges.

  • Avoid Air Drying: Do not allow the car to air dry, as this can lead to mineral deposits and visible water spots, especially on dark-coloured or high-gloss finishes.

Monthly Maintenance: Decontamination

  • Iron Fallout Removal: Every 4–6 weeks, use a dedicated iron fallout remover on lower panels and wheels to eliminate embedded iron particles. Allow it to dwell as per the product instructions, then rinse thoroughly.

  • Tar Removal: If tar spots are present, use a tar remover that’s safe for PPF. Apply gently and rinse off promptly.

PPF Care & Longevity Tips

  • Avoid Automatic Car Washes: Brushes and harsh chemicals can degrade the PPF. Always opt for manual washing.
  • No Abrasive Products: Do not use abrasive polishes, clay bars, or compounds on the film unless advised by a professional.
  • Pressure Washing: If using a pressure washer, keep the nozzle at least 1 metre away from the surface and avoid directing high-pressure water at the film’s edges.
  • Sealant Application: Consider applying a PPF-safe sealant every 3 months to enhance the film’s gloss and hydrophobic properties.

Warranty & Maintenance Compliance

To uphold the performance and any applicable warranty of your PPF:

  • Routine Maintenance: Adhere to the maintenance schedule and methods outlined in this guide.

  • Product Usage: Use only products that are safe for PPF. If unsure, consult Unit-11 for recommendations.

  • Professional Inspections: Schedule annual inspections with Unit-11 to assess the film’s condition and address any concerns.

  • Documentation: Keep records of maintenance and any issues observed, as this may be required for warranty claims.
