ECU Remapping Terms & Conditions
1. Introduction
These Terms and Conditions (“Terms”) govern the ECU remapping and vehicle tuning services provided by Unit Eleven Ltd (“we”, “us”, “our”). By using our services, you agree to be bound by these Terms. Please read them carefully before booking.
ECU remapping involves modifications to your vehicle’s engine management software. This service has implications for your manufacturer’s warranty, insurance policy, emissions compliance, and vehicle reliability. You must read and understand these Terms in full before proceeding.
2. Services Provided
We offer professional ECU remapping services including performance tuning, economy tuning, and combined performance/economy maps. Our remapping services modify the software within the Engine Control Unit (ECU) to optimise engine parameters such as fuelling, ignition timing, boost pressure (turbocharged vehicles), and throttle response.
3. Bookings and Appointments
3.1 Bookings are subject to availability and will be confirmed upon agreement of the service to be carried out.
3.2 If you need to cancel your booking, you must provide at least 48 hours’ notice.
3.3 Remapping typically takes 2-4 hours depending on the vehicle and map type. You will be advised of expected timeframes at booking.
4. Pricing and Payments
4.1 Prices are fixed for standard remapping services and will be confirmed at the time of booking. Custom tuning or dyno sessions may be quoted separately.
4.2 Full payment is due upon completion of the work. The vehicle will not be released until payment has been received in full.
4.3 We accept payment by cash, bank transfer, and debit/credit card. American Express and corporate cards are not accepted.
4.4 In the event of non-payment, we reserve the right to charge interest on overdue balances at the applicable statutory rate.
5. Pre-Remap Vehicle Requirements
5.1 Your vehicle must be in good mechanical condition before remapping. ECU remapping increases the performance demands on your engine and drivetrain. A remap on a poorly maintained vehicle may cause damage or accelerated wear.
5.2 Before we proceed with remapping, you confirm that:
- (a) The vehicle has been regularly serviced in accordance with manufacturer recommendations;
- (b) The engine oil and filter are in good condition;
- (c) The air filter is clean and unobstructed;
- (d) There are no existing engine management warning lights, fault codes, or known mechanical issues;
- (e) The vehicle is not leaking fluids or exhibiting any symptoms of mechanical problems;
- (f) All vehicle systems (turbo, intercooler, exhaust, fuel system) are functioning correctly.
5.3 We will conduct a pre-remap diagnostic scan to check for existing fault codes. If faults are present, we reserve the right to refuse to proceed with the remap until they are resolved.
5.4 We may also conduct a visual inspection. If we identify issues that could affect the remap or pose a risk of damage, we will advise you before proceeding.
5.5 If you proceed with a remap despite our advice regarding pre-existing issues, you accept full responsibility for any resulting damage or failure.
6. Fuel Requirements
6.1 Remapped vehicles may require higher-quality fuel to perform safely and optimally.
6.2 For performance remaps, we recommend using fuel with a minimum octane rating of 97 RON (super unleaded) unless otherwise advised. Using lower-grade fuel may result in reduced performance, engine knock, or damage.
6.3 Diesel vehicles should use quality fuel from reputable suppliers. Contaminated or poor-quality diesel can cause issues with remapped vehicles.
6.4 You are responsible for ensuring correct fuel is used following the remap.
7. Manufacturer’s Warranty
7.1 IMPORTANT: ECU remapping will almost certainly void your vehicle manufacturer’s warranty for the engine, transmission, and related components. Manufacturers have sophisticated diagnostic tools to detect software modifications, even if the map is later removed.
7.2 By proceeding with a remap, you acknowledge and accept that:
- (a) Your manufacturer’s warranty (if any remains) is likely to be voided;
- (b) Any claims for engine, turbo, gearbox, clutch, or drivetrain failure may be rejected by the manufacturer;
- (c) We are not liable for any loss of warranty coverage.
7.3 If maintaining your manufacturer’s warranty is important to you, we advise against proceeding with ECU remapping.
8. Insurance Implications
8.1 CRITICAL: You are legally required to inform your motor insurance provider of any modifications to your vehicle, including ECU remapping. Failure to disclose modifications may invalidate your insurance policy.
8.2 By proceeding with a remap, you confirm that:
- (a) You understand your obligation to notify your insurer;
- (b) You will inform your insurer of the modification before driving the vehicle on public roads;
- (c) You accept full responsibility for ensuring your insurance remains valid;
- (d) We are not liable for any insurance claims rejected due to undisclosed modifications.
8.3 We can provide documentation confirming the remap has been carried out upon request, which you may need for your insurer.
9. Emissions and MOT Compliance
9.1 Our remaps are designed to maintain compliance with UK MOT emissions standards for the vehicle’s age and type.
9.2 However, we cannot guarantee that a remapped vehicle will pass an MOT emissions test in all circumstances. Factors such as vehicle condition, maintenance, and individual testing station equipment may affect results.
9.3 Remapping does not alter physical emissions equipment (catalytic converters, DPF, EGR systems). Removal or tampering with emissions equipment is illegal for road use and is not a service we offer.
9.4 You are responsible for ensuring your vehicle remains roadworthy and MOT-compliant.
10. Performance Figures and Results
10.1 Any power or torque figures quoted are estimates based on typical results for your vehicle type and map. We do not guarantee specific power outputs.
10.2 Actual results vary depending on vehicle condition, mileage, fuel quality, ambient temperature, altitude, and individual vehicle tolerances.
10.3 Unless dyno testing is included in your service, power figures are not measured. Dyno testing can be arranged at additional cost.
10.4 Economy improvements are also estimates and depend heavily on driving style. Aggressive driving will negate any economy benefits.
11. Risks and Limitations
11.1 ECU remapping increases the performance output of your engine. This places additional stress on engine components, turbochargers, gearboxes, clutches, and drivetrains. You must understand and accept the following risks:
- (a) Accelerated wear on clutch, gearbox, and drivetrain components;
- (b) Increased stress on turbochargers and intercoolers;
- (c) Higher engine operating temperatures under load;
- (d) Potential for increased fuel consumption if driven aggressively;
- (e) Increased tyre and brake wear due to improved performance.
11.2 Remapping does not cause damage in itself when applied to a well-maintained vehicle and driven sensibly. However, we do not accept liability for component failures, accelerated wear, or damage arising from:
- (a) Pre-existing mechanical issues (whether disclosed or not);
- (b) Poor maintenance or servicing;
- (c) Aggressive driving, sustained high-speed driving, or track use;
- (d) Use of incorrect or poor-quality fuel;
- (e) Modifications to other vehicle components that affect engine performance.
11.3 Older vehicles, high-mileage vehicles, and vehicles with unknown service history carry a higher risk. We may advise against remapping such vehicles.
12. Remap Reversion
12.1 We retain a copy of your original factory ECU software. Should you wish to revert to the original map (e.g., for warranty claims, sale of vehicle, or personal preference), we can restore the original software for a fee.
12.2 Reversion does not guarantee that the remap will be undetectable by the manufacturer. Diagnostic tools may record evidence of previous software modifications.
12.3 Reversion does not reverse any wear or stress that has occurred while the vehicle was remapped.
13. Warranty on Remap
13.1 We warrant that the ECU remap software provided is fit for purpose and correctly written for your specific vehicle.
13.2 If you experience issues that are directly caused by the remap software (e.g., fault codes generated by the map, running issues directly attributable to map parameters), we will investigate and rectify the software at no additional cost.
13.3 The remap warranty does not cover:
- (a) Mechanical failures or component damage;
- (b) Issues caused by poor vehicle condition, maintenance, or pre-existing faults;
- (c) Issues caused by incorrect fuel use;
- (d) Issues arising from other modifications or third-party work;
- (e) Issues arising from aggressive driving or track use;
- (f) Wear and tear on clutch, gearbox, or drivetrain components.
13.4 The remap warranty is valid for 12 months from the date of installation.
13.5 If a main dealer or third party overwrites or resets the ECU software, our warranty is void.
14. Customer Acknowledgement and Declaration
By proceeding with ECU remapping, you acknowledge and declare that:
(a) You have read and understood these Terms in full;
(b) You understand that ECU remapping will void your manufacturer’s warranty;
(c) You understand your legal obligation to inform your insurance provider;
(d) You confirm that your vehicle is in good mechanical condition and has been properly maintained;
(e) You accept the risks associated with increased engine performance;
(f) You will use the correct grade of fuel as advised;
(g) You understand that we are not liable for mechanical failures, insurance issues, or warranty rejections;
(h) You are the registered keeper of the vehicle or have authorisation from the registered keeper to authorise this modification.
15. Quality and Rectification
15.1 If you experience issues you believe are related to the remap, you must notify us as soon as possible.
15.2 The vehicle must be returned to our premises for diagnosis. We cannot assess issues remotely or accept third-party diagnosis.
15.3 If the issue is caused by the remap software, we will rectify it at no cost. If the issue is unrelated to the remap (mechanical failure, maintenance issues, etc.), diagnostic fees may apply.
16. Liability
16.1 Our liability is limited to the cost of the remapping service provided.
16.2 We do not accept liability for mechanical failures, drivetrain damage, insurance issues, warranty rejections, MOT failures, or consequential losses.
16.3 We do not accept liability for damage caused by pre-existing faults, poor maintenance, aggressive driving, incorrect fuel, or modifications by third parties.
17. Force Majeure
We shall not be liable for any failure to perform or delay in performing our obligations where such failure or delay results from circumstances beyond our reasonable control.
18. Data Protection
We retain copies of original and modified ECU software for your vehicle. This data is stored securely and used only for the purposes of providing our services or reverting the map upon request. Data will not be shared with third parties without your consent, except where required by law.
19. Governing Law
These Terms and any services provided are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of England and Wales. Any disputes arising in relation to these Terms will be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales.
20. Severability
If any provision of these Terms is found to be invalid or unenforceable, the remaining provisions shall continue in full force and effect.
Acceptance of Terms
By booking and proceeding with ECU remapping, you acknowledge that you have read, understood, and agree to be bound by these Terms and Conditions. You confirm that you understand the implications for your warranty, insurance, and vehicle reliability, and you accept full responsibility for compliance with your legal obligations.
